Family factors,represented by family functioning,play an essential role in developing Pathological Internet Use in middle school student.This study constructs a moderated mediation model based on problem behavior theory to explore the psychological mechanism between family functioning and adolescent Pathological Internet use.Exploring the internal relationship among pathological internet use,family functioning,hope,and social withdrawal of middle school student,1223 middle school students in Guangdong Province were measured with Adolescent Pathological Internet Use Scale,Family Assessment Device-GF,Dispositional Hope Scale,and adolescent social withdrawal scale.The results showed that:(1)Pathological Internet use was negatively correlated with family functioning and hope,and positively correlated with social withdrawal;family functioning was positively correlated with hope,and negatively correlated with social withdrawal;hope was negatively correlated with social withdrawal;(2)Family functioning could directly predict pathological internet use and indirectly predict pathological internet use through hope.Hope played a mediating role in the impact of family functioning on Pathological Internet use;(3)The mediating effect of hope was moderated by social withdrawal.The mediating effect was stronger for low social withdrawal individuals,but not significant for high social withdrawal individuals.Specifically,the mediating effect of hope was stronger in low social withdrawal individuals,but not significant in high social withdrawal individuals.Finally,we find that the results were better for girls and high school students in some paths of the moderated mediation model.The results reveal the internal mechanism of hope and social withdrawal between family functioning and Pathological Internet use of middle school students.In the process of middle school mental health education,psychological teachers can improve students’ hope,reduce social withdrawal,and reduce their pathological Internet use.
