A Study Of Turkey Erdogan Administration’s U.S. Policy

Since the end of world War II,Turkish-American relations have played an important role in the Middle East,affecting the peace process in the region and the direction of major issues on the international stage.Turkey is the bridgehead of America’s system of Allies in the Middle East and its push for a "western-style democracy".And the United States is an important anchor for Turkey to expand its influence in the Middle East and participate in the global reform process.However,in the new century,the relationship between the United States and Turkey has become increasingly alienated,and there has been a "conflict and cooperation" communication mode between the two sides based on national interests.In particular,Turkey under Erdogan’s leadership,this pattern appears very clear in the bilateral diplomacy between the United States and Turkey,and the relationship with the United States shows a steep decline.Through historical analysis,literature analysis and qualitative and quantitative analysis,this paper studies Erdogan’s policy,characteristics and effect assessment on the United States from the perspective of "conflict and cooperation",and summarizes the objectives and contents of the policy on the United States.At the beginning of AK’s rule,Turkey’s foreign policy opened an era of "strategic depth",changed the way of "Westernization" and returned to the Middle East with friendly policies.After the divergence of strategic interests with the United States in the Middle East,Turkey resolutely entered the Islamic world and restored or maintained national relations with countries in West Asia and North Africa.Moreover,the outbreak of the "Arab Spring" pushed Turkish-American relations to the peak.The United States praised the "Turkish model" as a model in the Middle East,representing a successful case of western-style democracy in dealing with social crisis.Subsequently,the superiority of "strategic depth" in the face of the complex Middle East situation gradually diminished,the Kurdish ethnic issue appeared regional and international characteristics and penetrated into the Turkey-American exchange mechanism,the trust deficit between the two countries expanded and fell into the freezing point,and many problems also appeared in Turkish society.As a result,Turkish-American relations entered a new phase,leading to a military coup that implied American involvement in the overthrow of Erdogan’s government.Turkey needs the help of the US global system to expand its national strength and international influence,and the US also needs Turkey’s participation to maintain the system.The US policy has certain advantages,but it also faces some challenges.Turkey and the United States will conduct future cooperation and exchange mechanisms in the mode of "conflict cooperation".This paper(except for the introduction)has four parts:At the beginning of the first AK Party’s reign,the change course and relevant nodes of the US-Turkey relationship were initially analyzed through combing the domestic and foreign environment.The relationship between the United States and Turkey went through a period of relative harmony despite differences in the early years of the AK Party in power,and then the "Arab Spring" swept west Asia and North Africa.The trust deficit in the relationship between the United States and Turkey gradually expanded,and the relationship between the two sides entered a state of sudden tension.Generalize and summarize the objective and content of Erdogan government’s policy towards the US.From the security,political identity and economic and other areas,a comprehensive overview of Turkey’s diplomatic priorities to the United States.Under the mode of "conflict cooperation",Turkey intends to build "security" oriented diplomacy to accumulate "game capital" and seek for the "guiding right" to participate in the development of regional situation.Redefining Turkey’s identity and international role,repairing and maintaining its international image,develop the economy,accumulate national strength,and realize Turkey’s "national vision".The third part analyzes the reasons for the change of Erdogan government’s policy towards the US.In the complex and volatile domestic environment,Turkey’s territorial integrity and sovereignty unity are challenged due to the proliferation of Kurdish relations between Turkey and the United States.The Syrian war and other complex conflicts in the Middle East have provided An important window of opportunity for Turkey to export its national strength
