Surrealism, which rose between the two world wars in the 20 th century,is one of the trends of modern art,and its position in the history of western contemporary art can not be underestimated.Surrealism began to appear in the field of literature, and then this concept was introduced into the field of painting. As an artistic trend of thought, surrealism has exerted great influence on literature, architecture, film and television drama and art, which not only enriches the aesthetic ideas of our descendants, but also expands the road of artistic development.Surrealist painting is vivid and expressive, using realism, symbolism and abstraction, which gives people a sense of fantasy and absurdity after adopting certain artistic treatments such as reality, contradiction and fantasy. As a great master of the 20 th century, escher’s achievements are not only reflected in the field of art,but also involved in mathematics, science and philosophy. The most famous artistic effects in his pictures, such as optical illusion, have a great influence on later generations and even today. In his printmaking works, escher used a lot of surrealist methods such as assembly, transformation and deformation, which transformed the impossible visual angles in our life into artistic images, and transformed two-dimensional graphics into three-dimensional.Like some surrealist painters,he often used the method of isomorphism of contradictory elements,so that objects that did not conform to logic or objective reality appeared at the same time with ordinary life scenes.Although escher is an extremely meticulous and rational artist, surrealism is the embodiment of the artist’s subconscious mind, emphasizing some unconscious activities of people. However, after in-depth exploration of escher,we can know that rationality seems to have penetrated into escher’s body, and his rational treatment and conception of pictures are also the embodiment of his own subconscious mind. Therefore, escher and surrealism have something in common. This paper takes escher’s prints from the perspective of surrealism as the breakthrough point, and discusses the surrealist elements and characteristics in escher’s prints. This paper mainly discusses four aspects: 1.The formation and characteristics of escher’s printmaking art and the surrealism in his printmaking works.2.The visual presentation of surrealist elements in escher’s printmaking works can be divided into three points: strange combination of visual images, unified creation of contradiction space and distortion of picture elements.3.escher’s prints reflect the contradictory combination of infinite reincarnation of life aesthetics and paradox aesthetics,as well as the rational intervention of scientific aesthetics.4.The surrealist style in escher’s printmaking works will bring many angles and influences to later generations, which is of great practical significance.
