A Report Of Civil Aviation English Interpreting Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory | | Posted on:2022-07-27 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:S Y Wang | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2505306521981279 | Subject:Translation Master | | Abstract/Summary: | | | Civil aviation is a rapidly-developed industry and has become increasingly globalized.Quite a few airlines have international airways and recruit foreign crew for better international services.Since sufficient preparation is indispensable,interpreters play a crucial role in the pre-flight preparation for providing consecutive interpreting for both the foreign crew and AOC(Aeronautical Operation Center)employees.On the one hand,civil aviation English has typical characteristics of EST English for Science and Technology)and business English as well;On the other hand,its particularity in expertized field is another significant feature of civil aviation,which should be fully taken into consideration in strategies adoption in the interpreting task.This report analyzed the consecutive interpreting of pre-flight preparation for the foreign crew of the airline company under the guidance of the Skopos theory through case study.In practice,the Skopos theory provided significant guidance for the interpreting practice of the author.The Skopos theory is widely applied in science and technology interpreting and translation,thus the author adopted the three rules of the Skopos theory in interpreting practice.And this report intends to analyze the flexible applications of the three rules and corresponding interpreting strategies which were applied in the interpreting process.According to the analysis,different strategies were adopted in the report in tackling challenges in the process of interpreting practice.Major challenges in the practice can be classified into the following three types which are analyzed with cases in Chapter Four respectively.The first type is the interpreting of technical expressions such as terms,abbreviations and established usages.As the source text is technical material,the author needs to ensure the meaning of terms according to context and take technical dictionaries as references.Meanwhile,the author adopted the strategy of amplification to tackle this problem which is under the guidance of the rule of fidelity.The second type is redundancy,which is rather common to see in the source text,including repetition expression and semantic overlapping.According to the rule of coherence,the author deleted or combined some information which is not necessary to simplify delivery for achieving effective communication.The third type is ambiguity.The style of civil aviation should be clear and excise,thus the author adopted explanation or adding some information to avoid misunderstanding,which is under the guidance of the rule of Skopos.Going forward,the future of civil aviation translation/interpretation will be brighter and the author hopes its own experience can provide implications in this field and relevant practices. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Skopos Theory, Consecutive Interpreting, Civil Aviation, Pre-flight Preparation, Interpreting Strategies | |
