| Biography,considered as the epitome of a person’s life,provides a better understanding of the characteristics,behavior in life style and even the era background behind them.Since Victoria is the second longest reigning monarch in British history and a symbol of peace and prosperity in the UK,the translation and study of her biography is helpful for Chinese readers to have some knowledge of the British royal family and British history.The translation material in this paper is selected from the book We Two: Victoria and Albert written by a British writer Gillian Gill.The book records the marriage and daily life of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert.Judging by historical facts written in the book,the source text is objective and authentic,the style of writing language is natural yet vivid.Therefore,more efforts are made on restoration and reproduction of the original content and style in translation.For the sake of a qualified target text,Lin Yutang’s “Zhong,Shun,Mei” translation principle is applied as the theoretical basis of the translation practice and the application of the theory are discussed from three aspects in“Faithfulness,Smoothness and Beauty”.This translation practice is an attempt to use translation theory to guide the translation of biography literature.The flexible and accurate use of translation strategies and methods has been improved throughout the practice.On the premise of being faithful to the source text,the translator’s main role is brought into full play and the importance of pre-translation preparation is also realized.However,due to the differences between Chinese and foreign languages and the lack of the accumulation of background knowledge,the translation is not a perfect one. |
