The concept of "Samatha and Vipasyana" in Buddhism can be expressed in another way as "meditation and wisdom".When talking about the history of the development of the views on knowing and doing, academics also talk about the theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" and "meditation and wisdom".It shows that the theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" is a special view of knowing and doing. This article takes the theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" in Sui and Tang dynasties as a point of penetration to study the development history of the views on knowing and doing, and emphasizes the point that the theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" plays a connecting role. The theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" also attracts the attention of Confucianism and Taoism. The study of "Samatha-Vipasyana" theory in Sui and Tang dynasties mainly consists of Tiantai Sect’s thought of "paying equal attention to Samatha and Vipasyana" and Zen sect’s thought of "the non-duality of meditation and wisdom".According to the Tiantai Sect’s thought of "paying equal attention to Samatha and Vipasyana","one thought surveying the 3000 worlds" is the basis of cognition,"three perspective in one mind" is the method of cognition,"samadhi of oneself" is the way of practice.Samatha and Vipasyana are interrelated and influenced by each other. From the perspective of the relationship between knowledge and action,it can be understood as the view of "paying equal attention to knowing and doing".Hui Neng and his disciples prove the theory of "the non-duality of meditation and wisdom" by the theory of body and function. From the perspective of the relationship between knowledge and action,it can be understood as the view of "the non-duality of knowing and doing".During the Sui and Tang dynasties, some Confucianists and Taoists paid attention to and accepted the theory of "Samatha-Vipasyana".For example,"Vipasyana" influenced Sima Chengzhen’s thoughts of "shou xin" and "tai ding".Liang Su put forward the theory of "ming jing fu xing" by studying the theory of "Samatha-Vipasyana".Later Confucian scholars also put forward the idea that knowledge and action influence each other, such as Zhu xi’s thought of "knowing and doing are always required",Wang Yangming’s thought of "the unity of knowledge and action",Wang Fuzhi’s thought of "knowing and doing reinforce each other".Although these views followed the related thoughts of the pre-Qin period, they were also influenced by the theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" in Sui and Tang dynasties. It shows that the theory of "Samatha and Vipasyana" in Sui and Tang dynasties plays an important role in the development history of the views of knowing and doing.
