The case study was conducted at Joy English School and is a practice report that focuses on the Chinese to English interpretation of teaching administration material..This paper focuses on the importance of both cognitive and linguistic aspects in consecutive interpreting as well as mistakes that occur during note-taking.The writer concluded that linguistic and cognitive ability complement each other but an interpreter’s linguistic skills still remain paramount and without this,improvements in cognitive skill will have little bearing on the quality of interpreting.A lack of linguistic skill led to the writer only taking notes in English,rather than the source language of Chinese which increased cognitive pressure and caused significant pauses and unnecessary utterances throughout the interpreting process.Research also showed that redundancy and linguistic padding are detrimental to the quality of consecutive interpreting in this setting where the material consists of technical language.Literal translations and grammatical errors can easily occur if the interpreter’s language analysis skill is not up to par,even in one’s mother tongue.The research showed that an interpreter must not neglect practicing one’s native language in order to increase range of vocabulary and avoid repetitive language.
