A Study On Synergy Of Modes Of Multimodal Discourse In TED Speech

In recent years,with the growing development of science and technology,language is no longer the only way for people to communicate in daily life.The world of discourse is increasingly showing multimodality,so the academic circle has set off an upsurge of Multimodal Discourse Analysis.However,Multimodal Discourse Analysis is still in the stage of continuous exploration.At this stage,some scholars mainly discuss the related theories of multimodal discourse,the relationship between various modalities,the application of Multimodal Discourse Analysis theory in foreign language teaching,and the application of Multimodal Discourse Analysis in texts.There are relatively few studies on the modes synergy of multimodal discourse.In terms of genre features,although there are more studies on TED speeches,most of their themes are about education,art,technology,and other aspects,but there are relatively few studies on viruses.Therefore,this research uses the official website of TED and selects a speech about viruses published by Bill Gates in 2015 as the corpus.It is mainly qualitatively analyzed to explore the relationship between different modes based on the relationship between dynamic video modes.In the multimodal discourse of Bill Gates’ TED speech video,the whole speech can be divided into the beginning of the speech,the topic of the speech,the climax of the speech,and the ending part.The main research results are as follows:(1)In Bill Gates’ TED speech,a total of six different modes are used.They are visual mode,auditory mode,gesture mode,facial expression mode,text mode and musical mode.(2)In the Bill Gates’ TED speech,three characteristics of modes are mainly displayed.The choice of mode has a certain degree of rationality,and it is not arbitrarily matched together.Multimodality is effective and complete in terms of expression.In the same plot,modalities have primary and secondary distinctions.(3)Different modal discourses are interrelated,and these relationships can be roughly summarized into complementary relationships and non-complementary relationships.In the whole speech process,the auditory mode is always the main form adopted by the speaker,which is also determined by the characteristics of the speech.Based on the above findings,this research further confirms the feasibility and explanatory power of the dynamic multimodal analysis theoretical framework for Bill Gates’ TED speech video analysis.At the same time,it provides a relatively novel perspective for the analysis and research of dynamic speech videos.In terms of practice,this research can be a source of inspiration for speakers and audiences.Besides,before the epidemic has completely disappeared,it can cause readers to strengthen their awareness of virus prevention and encourage everyone’s determination and courage to overcome the epidemic.
