The positive or negative impact of language testing on language teaching is called the backwash effect of language testing.Many researchers at home and abroad have conducted a lot of researches on this issue,and put forward far-reaching theoretical hypotheses and theoretical models,but majority of them mainly focused on backwash effect on teaching instead of learning.The English of JSGT(Junior School Graduation Test)is an important test in China,and the score of the English reading accounts for a large part of the score.Thus,it is necessary to find out the backwash effect of the English reading test of JSGT on students’ learning.The research intends to find out what kind of backwash effects does the English reading test of JSGT have on junior high school students’ English learning? What aspects of learning are affected by the English reading test of JSGT? This study combines qualitative and quantitative methods,questionnaire and interview are used as research instruments to collect data.Investigation was conducted in a junior high school in Guangzhou.233 students from junior one to junior three and 31 junior high school English teachers participated in the study.The results of the study show that the English reading test of JSGT has a very complex backwash effect on junior high school students’ English learning.There are both positive backwash and negative backwash.The English reading test of JSGT can stimulate students’ learning and has a positive effect on students’ learning attitudes and learning methods.Students are willing to put more time and energy on English reading due to the English reading test of JSGT.Students take a positive attitude towards the English reading test of JSGT.However,the English reading test of JSGT also gives pressure on students,which has a certain negative effect on the students’ learning objective,learning content and learning materials.The purpose of students’ reading is to take the exam,and the selected reading materials are also for the exam.It is worth noting that teachers play an important role in this process.Students’ learning greatly benefits from the guidance of teachers.Teachers’ test-oriented teaching will also make students’ test-oriented learning.Based on the results of the research,the author also offers some suggestions forteaching and learning on English reading of JSGT.1)Students should adopt different learning methods and adjust reading comprehension strategies when facing different reading passages.2)Students can put reading practice as a schedule to cultivate their hobby of reading and stimulate their interest in reading.What’s more,they should expose themselves to the language environment to improve their reading level.3)Teachers should reasonably choose and integrate reading materials that are in line with students’ age and within their cognitive level,allow students to truly participate in classroom activities,and establish a complete evaluation system for the formative assessment so that teachers can give students timely feedback,assistance and guidance in teaching of reading comprehension.
