| Guangyun, whose full name is Guangyun Rebuilt in the Great Song Dynasty, was rewritten and edited by Chen Pengnian and his peers and completed in 1008.It is an official Rhyming Dictionary describing the voice system of old Chinese that was commonly used from 6rd century AD to the late of 13th century. The explanation behind each word allows Guangyun to also be used as a character dictionary. There are 5 Parts of this book and my work is based on Part 1.The versions of Guangyun are divided into three categories:Northern Song official version,Southern Song official version, and Southern Song private version. The versions of the Yuan,Ming, and Qing dynasties and the later versions are derived from these three categories. The various versions are housed in China,Japan,Korea, and Russia, among other countries;however, each version is incomplete to a certain extent, because the technologies of book producing and storage conditions were undeveloped in ancient time. The aim of this paper is to restore the original appearance of Guangyun by way of comparative study of the six different versions of this book as well as previous scholars’ collations.Though my predecessors have collated this book many times, there are still many shortcomings in the study of this field, and the book’s cumbersome annotations have yet to be sorted out clearly. In this paper,I take the theories and methodologies of bibliography and collation science as guides and analyse the questions at the point of phonology. One relatively intact inscribed earlier version of Song is taken as the basic material to be checked in its mistakes in phonology and comments.Additionally, the dissemination of the version is studied and the mistakes found by previous scholars are also checked to reveal mistakes introduced by modern scholars. This paper is organized by classifying mistakes found into seven categories with accompanying explanations:errors in preface, head rhyme errors, behalf of words errors, small rhyme and phonetic notation errors, interpretation errors, documentary evidence errors, and polyphone errors. The other merit of this paper is that the research method is scientific. The internal and external are combined.Instead of using the materials from Guangyun to prove the problems in itself,as has been done previously,we refer to its contemporary classics comprehensively and straighten out logic to restore the original appearance of Guangyun and tell readers accurate information with historical integrity. |
