Microbial fuel cell(MFC)is emerging technology,in which microorganisms is used as biocatalysts to invert the substance’s chemical energy into electrical energy. It has a lot of advantages such as mild reaction conditions,a wide range of sources of raw materials, green, and so on.Swine wastewater is a typical high concentration organic wastewater.Application of MFC in the swine wastewater can combine swine wastewater treatment with electricity generation together, and can be expected to change the situation of the exsiting high-cost treatment of swine wastewater. However, the electricity output of MFC is low,so MFC is still in experimental research stage. There are many technical problems to be solved and many theories need to be further improved.Power generation in MFC using Swine wastewater as substrates in this paper was studied. This article is divided into following sections:(1)introduction of background and significance of the subject, research status and problems of MFC;(2)introduction of test equipment, materials and analysis;(3)power generation of MFC and purification of swine wastewater with operating factors, such as temperature, initial anolyte p H,stirring rate were studied to determine optium reaction conditions;(4)the biofilm on anode electrode was collected, and biological diversity and population was analysized to determine the dominant populations in MFC;(5)by contrast of the electrical characteristics of electricigens,an electricigen was conferred to have optimum performance treating swine wastewater in MFC,and its power generation properties with different concentrations of swine wastewater in MFC was investigated;its operating results at different conditions of external resistance was studied to confirm whether MFC has the potential for practical application;(6)purification of swine wastewater and power generation of MFC in series and parallel were studied.Experimental results show that:(1)operating factors, such as temperature, initial anolyte p H,stirring rate in MFC have great effect on power generation and purification of swine wastewater, and it is effective to improve the performance of MFC by changing operating conditions;(2)biofilm on anode electrode has a wealth of microbial diversity and complex microbial phase in MFC,and the advantages of microbial biofilm on the anode contains Actinobacteria,Proteobacteria,Bacteroidetes;(3)electricigens has its unique electrochemical characteristics,so apposite electricigen should be chosen to improve the performance of MFC,and with swine wastewater as substrate in MFC is concerned,Ensifer adhaerens is an optimum microorganism;(4)power generation of MFC with different concentrations of swine wastewater as substrate varied significantly;the power generation was at best with the concentration of 4000mg/L,in which stable output voltage was 372m V,maximum power density was 853.7m W·m-2;stable voltage output in MFC was exhibited with different conditions of external resistance, which showed that it has the potential to be applied to actual engineering;(5)voltage amplification could be realized by cascading two single MFC and three single MFC respectively,in which voltage reverse would be caused to affect the performance of the battery pack;current amplification and the internal resistance reduction could be realized by paralleling two single MFC,in which voltage output is also relatively stable.
