Self-control is an ability to overcome impulsive, habitual,or automated responses and consciously control the direction of their behavior(Baumeister,Vohs,& Tice,2007).The Strength Model of Self-control suggests that self-control is a limited psychological resource.Once the loss is received in the previous task,it will affect the performance of follow-up task, which is ego depletion. There are studies to prove that positive emotion has a compensating effect on ego depletion, but there is less research on the effect of positive emotion on ego depletion in different motivational dimensions. In addition, the construal level as a relatively new concept in recent years, studies have shown that high construal level can promote self-control,but there is no clear conclusion on whether it can compensate for ego depletion. In view of the above problems, this study is divided into two parts, with college students as the subject, using experimental methods, mainly to explore the impact of emotions, construal level on self-control.Study 1 verified the compensation effect of positive emotions on selfcontrol under ego depletion. In the experiment, college students were tested. The e-crossing task was used as the depletion task, and the video materials were used to activate the participants ’positive, neutral, and negative emotions.Using the Stroop score of the participants on the Stroop task to test the effect of different potency emotions on self-control under ego depletion. It was found that positive emotions can compensate for ego depletion and promote self-control.Negative emotions have no significant effect on self-control under ego depletion.Study 2 explores the effects of different intensity of approachmotivated positive emotions and construal levels on self-control.Taking college students as subjects, using the e-crossing task as depletion task, using video materials to activate participants’ high approach-motivated positive emotion, neutral emotion, and low approach-motivated positive emotion, and using the Why / How task to activate their construal level.Using the Stroop score of the participants on the Stroop task as the dependent variable to explore the effects of different intensity of approach-motivated positive emotions and construal levels on self-control.The results show that low approach-motivated positive emotion can compensate for ego depletion, while high approach-motivated positive emotion cannot compensate for ego depletion;high construal level can compensate for ego depletion, and low construal level cannot compensate for ego depletion. There is an interaction between different intensity of approach-motivated positive emotions and construal levels. In general, activating individuals with low approach-motivated positive emotion or high construal level can compensate individuals’ self-control under ego depletion and improve individuals’ self-control capabilities. However,in the case that the low approach-motivated positive emotion have compensated the ego depletion, the construal levels have no significant effect on self-control.
