After entering the 21st century, the news industry has undergone tremendous changes with the rise of the Internet. The innovation of news theory and practice requires academic knowledge from multiple disciplines.Back in the past, sociology of news,as an inter-discipline,did news research under sociological perspectives, theories, and methods, and provided sufficient sociological nourishment for the development of journalism, and created glorious newsroom research in the 1970s.And then looking at the United States at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, you will find that since the beginning of the sociology discipline, sociological news research has begun to appear and continues to this day, which has gradually formed an academic tradition, sociological research into news.Over the course of more than a century, rich research directions have been developed as the time changes.Combining the American era backgrounds in different periods and the early development of American sociology, through studying literature on news in American Journal of Sociology,American Sociological Review,Social Forces from 1895 to 1960,this paper tries to pay a return visit on the tradition of sociology of news research at different stages mentioned above, which means to discover and sort out sociological perspectives, methods and theories diachronically, and to painting the change picture of tradition in American sociology of news research. At the same time, this research tries to connect the tradition with the present journalism disciplinary development, and to bring new research imaginations for the development of this discipline.
