The ground certificate is a contract of buried land sale used in traditional folk funeral ceremonies since the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is placed in the tomb as a “land certificate of Sheol”and serves as a voucher for the deceased to buy land for burial. The emergence of the ground certificate is closely related to the concept of life and death of the Han Dynasty, the belief in land and the development of private ownership of land. The development of private ownership of land and the emergence of real land purchase and sale contracts provide a template for the purchase of land coupons in ghost world land purchase and sale documents. In the Middle Ages, the ground certificate were written from Han to Tang, from simple to complicated, from true to superstitious, from single land purchase to gradual integration into the town tomb factors, and the elements of seller, mediator, and price of the ground certificate also changed with time. However,by Tang, the structure and contents of the ground certificate and the elements of the certificates had gradually become unified. The main users of ground certificates are civilians, sometimes with high-ranking officials and nobles.Ground certificates include a large number of people, gods and ghosts of various types. They each play different roles in ground certificates and play different meanings and functions. As an important burial object in the funeral ceremony, the ground certificate was buried in the tomb with the deceased during the burial. It is an important text that remains in ancient funeral activities to study the ancient people’s way of dealing with death and the view of death it reflects.
