| In recent years,a great number of foreign films and TV series have been introduced to China, which not only greatly enriched the spiritual life of the masses, but also further promoted the dissemination and exchange of Chinese and western cultures. The introduction of foreign documentaries not only enables domestic audiences to have the opportunity to understand foreign cultures, but also promotes cultural exchanges and communication between China and foreign countries. This paper is a translation report based on the BBC documentary In Their Own Words-English Novelists. The author chooses Among the Ruins, which is the first episode of the documentary,as the target of translation practice. The source text is divided into documentary subtitle commentary and subtitle contemporaneous sound. The style of the commentary text is relatively plain, with standard grammar and many compound sentences. The subtitle contemporaneous sound are the main exposition method of this documentary. The language style is different due to the different characters and language habits, and the grammar rules are not very standard, with many short sentences.According to different language styles, the author should give priority to the skopos rule of the target text and choose appropriate translation strategies. In this paper, under the guidance of skopos theory, the author will translate the text according to the three principles of skopos theory, namely, the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. The author selects some translation strategies, such as free translation, combination of literal translation and free translation, and addition translation. Moreover, the guiding significance of subtitle translation under the guidance of skopos theory is summarized. The author hopes that this translation report can provide reference materials for fellow subtitle translators and further improve the quality of subtitle translation. |
