In the years of Arts learning and practise.The author has been greatly influenced by traditional Chinese ’’Linear Aesthetic’’.Line,as an arts element and a performance measure,plays an important role in the overall visual arts and indicates human wisdom.No matter where the ’’line’’ exists,from Chinese I Ching to western geometry,from Chinese painting and calligraphy to traditional sculpture,the consciousness of ’’line’’ plays incomparable role.As an ideology and modeling language,line occupies a great part in traditional arts.In this essay,the author first outline the cultural source of line and its application in traditional Chinese painting,calligraphy and sculpture.Then,set forth its three functions in sculpture,namely,performance profile,volume,and spirit.At last,incoporate ’’line’’ into a personal creation and reflects as a modeling language.
