Writing is a creative activity,and it plays a vital role in English learning in senior high school.However,in practical English writing,it can often be found that although students learn a certain amount of writing theory,there are still some textual logic problems in their compositions,and these problems are often ignored by teachers.Therefore,the study and training of cohesion and coherence theory not only improve students’ awareness of cohesion and coherence but also learn how to write good articles.The purpose of this study is to apply cohesion and coherence theory to the teaching of English writing in senior high school,and try to solve the following questions:(1)What are the effects of cohesion and coherence theory on senior high school students’ English writing ability?(2)What are the changes in senior high school students’ awareness to English writing after applying the cohesion and coherence theory?In order to study the above two questions,this study selects 80 students from two parallel classes in the second year of a senior high school in Shenyang as the subject of this applied study.The two parallel classes are divided into two groups: experiment class and control class.In the experiment class,the writing teaching process is divided into three phases.The first phase mainly introduces the theory of cohesion andcoherence by comparing 2 model texts.The second phase mainly describes the roles of cohesion and coherence theory;then some exercises make students familiarize the role deeply.The third phase mainly carries on the general writing practice,which promotes the student writing coherence much better.While in the control class,the students adopted the traditional teaching model.Three instruments are used in the study: test,questionnaire and interview.The data from the test is processed by SPSS22.0,and researcher arranges the data from questionnaires and interviews.The experimental results show that after learning the theoretical knowledge of cohesion and coherence,students begin to pay attention to the coherence and cohesion of the articles,and can use different cohesion devices to improve their sense of cohesion and coherence.The application of cohesion and coherence theory in English writing teaching in senior high school can effectively enhance students’ writing ability and achievement.Secondly,after learning cohesion and coherence,students’ confidence in writing have been significantly improved.They are no longer afraid of writing and begin to try to analyze and sort out the information by themselves.Based on the analyzed data,students can write a highly logical and coherent English composition.
