In the 1980s,the fifth generation directors led by Director Zhang Yimou openedup their own film-making way with aspirations to launch a revolution in the filmindustry based on the collective reflection over predecessor film-makers’ creationpractices.Director Zhang Yimou set up his own distinct personal style by virtue of theinheritance and promotion of traditional Chinese culture.In particular,the most typical form used by him to carry forward traditional Chinese culture should be theadoption of Chinese Opera.By introducing audio-visual technique,he assisted theemotional expression,image molding and narrative of films.While the artistic features of Chinese Opera elements also exert different functions in films.Inconsideration of the prominent performance of opera factors in films,it is also ofgreat necessity to explore the connection between Director Zhang Yimou and ChineseOpera.Taking Zhang Yimou’s films as the research subject,this thesis utilizes filmnationalitzation,carnival theory and cultural consciousness theory to explore operafactors in the films of Zhang Yimou.While affirming the values of Zhang Yimou’sfilms in the promotion of opera,it also points out existing problems and proposespertinent suggestions.The thesis expects to make negligible contribution to the studyon the relation between Chinese films and Chinese opera.
