At present, big data and its related technologies have been more and more applied to urban practical planning. In particular, the large-scale taxi GPS trajectory data has gradually been valued in city planning and traffic management because it is considered a perfect indication of traffic conditions and spatial features of a city by recording the 24-hour change of dynamic population flow around the city.As for taxi GPS trajectory data,it occurred to us naturally that data mining algorithms can be applied to identify the popular pick-up and drop-off spots of taxi-hailers and their travel routes in a city during different periods of a day.The popularity of these spots and routes is certainly due to the special characters of their own and on the other hand,is a probable indication of their important roles in the city. However,so far no relevant research documents have been found yet to demonstrate the specific connection between these hot spots and urban planning,or their practical value in urban planning.Currently, this kind of big dada is mainly applied to analyze the dynamics and land use status around a city rather than its hot spots and routes for taxi-hailers.This paper attempts to make up for this gap by studying such major subjects as mentioned above with the GPS trajectory dataset from Shanghai Qiangsheng Taxi Company in March 2016 taken as an example. The major contents and contributions of this paper are as follows:(1)Firstly,this paper designs clustering algorithms to mine the popular pick-up and drop-off spots and travel routes for taxi passengers respectively during working days and weekends of that month in Shanghai. Finally, relevant mining results can be visualized on Baidu map.(2)Secondly,this paper makes a correlation analysis between these hot spots and some relevant parts of the spatial planning in Shanghai Master Plan 2017-2035.It is found that the spatial distribution of these spots can fairly reflect the spatial structure of the city, map the network of its public activity centers, and identify the status quo of its land functions.By doing so,the specific role of mining these hot spots in urban planning can be clarified.(3)Finally,this paper compares those hot travel routes with existing bus lines around the city and analyzes the PoI information of areas between the starting points and destinations of these routes. It is verified that the existence of these routes can perfectly reflect the connectivity and functional complementarity of these areas, thus it is clear that mining these popular routes can provide a practical basis for the city planning in terms of its bus route and functional layout.
