With the deepening of economic globalization and integration,foreign languages,in particular English,are essential to our understanding of and engagement with the rest of the world.Junior high schools,as the preliminary stage of English education,play an important role in the development of English teaching in China.How students learn English and how well they take it in vary with different teaching methods.Twenty years since the start of classroom reform in Dulangkou Middle School in Chiping County of Shandong province,a method combining preparation,presentation and feedback has been adopted,with independent and cooperative teaching and learning being its core.In this method,students were the center of the classrooms and teachers offered them guidance.By fully tapping the students’ motivation and enthusiasm,the method enhanced the efficiency of English teaching.By conducting a qualitative study,this paper explored the learning process of students at Dulangkou Middle school and the positive effects that such a method had on English learning through in-depth interview and classroom observationand the writing of field notes.It is found that the English teaching in Du Langkou Middle School concentrates on students’ learning process and language use,and emphasizes on cultivating the communicative capability of the learners.In the English teaching and learning of Du Langkou Middle School,students attached importance to understanding.The English learning integrated large amount of recitation with practices for flexible utilization.Students in Du Langkou Middle School had the courage to express themselves and use English language in a creative way.Using their initiative was the key for students to improving the effectiveness of English learning.Stimulating students’ sense of honor and paying attention to their sense of achievement constituted a significant impetus for students to learn English.It reflected the theoretical basis of second language acquisition.
