Report On Interrogation Interpreting For The People’s Procuratorate Of Guangzhou

With China’s deepening open-up to the outside world,there have emerged more and more legal cases of involving foreign persons who do not speak Chinese and need to be provided with judicial interpreting services.Interpreting for interrogation conducted by public prosecutors of various procuratorates is one type of these specialized services which have drawn close attention of quite a few practitioners and researchers.This thesis reports author’s own practice as an interrogation interpreter for the People’s Procuratorate of Guangzhou.Related case information,antecedent analysis,scheduling,interrogation participants,interrogation process,relevant interpreting requirements and process,and other types of pre-task preparation are discussed.This thesis then focuses on close assessment of the author’s performance of the task by drawing on the three parameters of quality measurement of interrogation interpreting: mission process,interpreter’s personal efforts and feedback.Shortcomings found in the interpreting activity are discussed as case analysis to reflect on the author’s interpreting performance,which are mainly interpreting of figures and charts and observation of the principles of faithfulness and cohesion in interpreting.Being clearly different with court interpreting,interrogation interpreting is less formal in environment requirements but stricter in questioning case details which can determine the sentencing of the whole case,which exerts higher demand on interpreter’s language ability of being faithful in both literal and underlying meaning of the prosecutor’s words on purpose of helping dig out case information as accurate as possible.It is hoped that the case analyses of extracts of the interpretation transcript and the review of the interpreting quality can provide an accessible method for quality measurement of interrogation interpreting for a people’s procutatorate.In addition,the features and skills of interrogation interpreting and related task preparations summarized in this thesis are hoped to have contributed to studies on judicial interpreting and can be of some use to those who have no experience with interrogation interpreting.
