Honestly speaking, male is dominant in different national cultures all over the world, while female is compelled to be “the second sex” in a long term.To some extent,as a result, the appeals of women have always been overshadowed and constrained, which causes that their unique experience cannot express equally, thus it is hard to show clearly in such a co-existential world of man and woman.Certainly, the same is true for art,the representation of culture.“Female Paintings” had not come to people’s life until the concept of “Feminine Art”,which is characterized by its gender consciousnesses, was proposed in the 1990 s.By analyzing influential contemporary Chinese female paintings, this paper aims to reveal the way which is used by women,in their paintings,to reflect the world that has been ignored by us intentionally or unintentionally. On these grounds, this study will focus on these following four parts.Firstly, research the position of gender role in painting and distinguish three similar concepts,“female artist”“female painting” and “feministic painting”,in order to get a clear definition.Secondly, research the feminine consciousness in contemporary painting. This paper chooses paintings of Zhou Sicong(a female artist born in the 1940s),Yan Ping(a female artist born in the 1960s),Shen Ling,Yu Hong(female artists born in the 1960s)as well as Xia Junna(a female artist born in the 1970s),analyzing deeply on their works and female perspectives and consciousnesses reflected by their works.Thirdly,by discussing the main question—“walk out of the shadow and come into the light ”,this paper interprets the development of female painting as far as possible. The main research point is to analyze the obscure female perspective in traditional paintings under the instruction of the concept of marking principle.
