Previous studies have been made on head about its semantic structure, social and cultural features and the function of conceptual metaphor and metonymy in its meaning extension, which are plentiful and provide a solid foundation for my study. However, previous studies do not involve other words that possess the same meaning with head, such as“shou(首)”,“naodai(脑袋)”,“top”,“pate”.This thesis makes the study more comprehensive and systematic by exploring the word from the perspective of encyclopedic knowledge network activated by the formal unit of head. This research on HEAD is comparatively exhaustive and it includes the collocations of head and its metaphorical and metonymical usages.Through analyzing the English and Chinese HEAD/ “头” frames’ elements collected from language database and authoritative dictionaries, this thesis has attempted to find out the elements that represented can be divided into formal unit thing concepts and event concepts and elements in Chinese “头” frame outnumber that in English HEAD frame.Reasons behind the existence of same elements are mainly due to the same body experience and similar cognition and the existence of different elements are caused by different cultural models, which include traditional culture, geographical condition and historical background. In terms of representation of the formal unit concepts, representation of the elements in the Chinese and English HEAD/ “头” frames is based on the following three ways: direct stating, conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy while metonymy is much more than the other two ways.Different structures of the formal unit in HEAD/ “头” frames are the result of iconicity principle.Under the operation of this principle,it is clear to see the profiled elements and hided elements. In the same time, different language types and the economy of language also lead to this difference.
