Film, as a form of recreation, has become an indispensable part of cultural communication and plays an increasingly important role. However, language barriers have restricted people’s understanding and appreciation of films from other countries. Thus, how to translate subtitling appropriately and make audience feel the same way as the native people have become an issue of great concern. This thesis analyzes subtitling translation from pragmatics and cognitive view. The author takes film subtitling translation as research object and studies five outstanding Chinese films’ subtitling, which have great influence on international stage and win awards in the International Film Festival. From the perspective of Jef. Verscheuren’s contextual adaption, the major research is made from three perspectives of adaption: adaption to linguistic context, adaption to communicative context and adaption to cultural context. Moreover, both the impact of society and culture on context and the adaption and selection of target language are also discussed elaborately with examples. It is concluded that contextual adaption can be best used to analyze the adaption of film subtitling translation to linguistic, communicative and cultural contexts. The research result can help translator make proper expressions in different contexts so as to make subtitling translation accurately and help audience understand the cultural connotation in original films better.
