Study On The Measures Of Phonetic Difficulties In Thai English Interpreting

With the increasingly frequent exchanges between countries around the world, English has also been more widely spread. Now it has become the most influential and frequently used language in the whole world. However, affected by geographical differences and the mother tongue, interpreters will encounter many different English varieties during different interpreting occasions. Differing greatly from standard English, those varieties will impact the interpreting process more or less. Therefore, it seems quite important to study the characteristics and influences caused by those English varieties so as to improve the listening and information receiving ability of interpreters.In recently years, driven by China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, the communication and cooperation between China and Thailand are developing continually. English is playing an increasingly important role in different cooperative fields between China and Thailand. Formed under multilingual context, Thai English owns distinctive pronunciation features and thus poses big challenge on interpreters’ listening comprehension. Based on the collection and observation of a large number of authentic vocal materials of Thai English, this paper analyzes and summarizes the pronunciation features of Thai English and their impacts on listening comprehension of Interpreting such as the impacts of listening and information receiving, effort coordination and key information identification. And then there will be some suggestions, such as being well-prepared before the interpretation, "Formula" exercises and adopting a positive attitude.
