In China, the material used to make military backpack is generally polyester fabric. Although military backpack only an assistant combat tool, but in order to protect the safety of soldiers, the fabric used not only require high strength, light weight, but also need to have flame retardant property, water repellent and other functions. Usually water repellent finishing will affect flame retardancy. In order to meet the actual requirement with better flame retardant and water repellent property, we make composite finishing for polyester fabric. In this paper, I select different kinds of flame retardant and water repellent agents to do the padding-drying-baking finishing process. The factors influencing the flame retardant finishing and water repellent finishing were discussed individually. The single factor experiment was carried out according to the amount of the reagent, the curing temperature and curing time, and the optimum finishing conditions were obtained. The feasibility of flame retardant and water repellent composite finishing of polyester fabric was analyzed by two-bath step-by-step finishing and one-bath finishing test. The results show that the water repellent finishing process will affect fabric’s flame retardancy; after water repellent finishing, it’s difficult to pad the flame retardant agent on fabric. The feasibility of one-bath composite finishing is higher than two-bath step-by-step finishing.Flame retardant SY-AF and RUCO-FLAM VOD with good flame retardancy were selected to carry out one-bath finishing test with different kinds of water repellent agents respectively, and the optimal combination of reagents was screened out. Based on the amount of flame retardant agent, the amount of water repellent agent, the curing temperature and the curing time, a 4-factor-4-level orthogonal test was designed to study the flame retardancy, water repellency and other mechanical properties of finished fabrics. The optimal formulation was determined:flame retardant agent RUCO-FLAM VOD 300 g/L and water repellent agent SY-09 50 g/L. The optimum conditions were:drying at 110℃ for 180 s then curing at 170℃ for 120 s. After finishing the fabric’s after-flame time is 2.49 s, the char length is 7.7 cm, the level of water repellency could reach grade 3, and mechanical properties are good.
