In the areas whose network infrastructure is in low level or in the emergency environment whose network infrastructure is destroyed, the temporary commucation network should be self-organizing, multi-hop, and being able to access the external network. Mobile ad hoc network(MANET) can meet the requirements of internal communication, but it has no access to the backbone. Additional work have to be done to access the Internet service. The popular practice for MANET to access the Internet is choosing some gateways through which MANET can act as a subnet of the Internet. In such solutions, gateways will be the bottleneck of the whole network. Meanwhile, gateway selection and handoff are also the problems. Since aforesaid problems, a new protocol was implemented on embedded devices based on iAODV, and route optimization and link failure repair were proposed and implemented for a further step. The interconnect protocol introduced interconnect node(ICN) and wired node(WDN), and was compatible with multiple network interfaces. To access Internet connectivity, the interconnect protocol routed ICNs, WDNs and wireless nodes(WLNs) as peers. All nodes in Integrated Internet and MANET(IIM) are equipped with same integrated protocol. Therefore, the cost of gateway discovery, gateway mantaince and gateway handoff is cut down. Experimental results show that in the presence of ICNs and WDNs, the new protocol has a higher overall network bandwidth and better data transfer stability than AODV. When the network topology changes frequently, it can detect the change of environment and try to find a better path by route optimization. Besides, the link failure repair module can detect the link failure timely and try to resore the path locally. If there is no backup link, notify the source by sending RERR. In traditional MANET, the interconnect protocol has a similar performance to AODV. This demonstrates that the original performance of AODV doesn’t be lowered by supporting the interconnection of MANET and the Internet.
