Thulium-doped fiber laser due to the wide gain spectrum, the output laser wavelength range is located near the absorption peak of water molecules, eye-safe, it was widely used in laser radar and remote sensing. In addition, the output wavelength can also be used as3~5μm laser pumping source, therefore has important research value. Domestic and foreign did a lot of theoretical and experimental studies and made many achievements in thulium-doped fiber laser. Currently, the manufacturing process of thulium-doped fiber laser key components and thermal properties are the main factors limiting its application. Thulium-doped fiber laser output characteristics and thermal characteristic was studied in this paper respectively from the aspects of theory and experiment.Theoretical work was mainly focused on research thulium-doped fiber laser output characteristics under single-ended and double-ended pumps, as well as pump and signal light distribution characteristics along the fiber under different fiber structure. On this basis, the thermal characteristics were analyzed of thulium-doped fiber laser, to study the impact of the pumping mode and convective heat transfer coefficient on temperature distribution, and the impact of the convective heat transfer coefficient for output power. Obtained the pump and signal light distribution curves at different ways of pumping and heat distribution characteristics of thulium-doped fiber laser, for the experiment reasonable selected fiber length、 pump mode、 pumping power and cooling methods to provide evidence.Experimental work is main body of this paper. In addition to researching thulium-doped fiber end face treatment process, but also the output characteristics of thulium-doped fiber laser in the single-ended and double-ended pumping, under water cooling conditions. Ultimately obtained center wavelength of about2μm, respectively laser power output with22W and41.3W under in a single-ended and double-ended pumped. Finally summarizes the shortcomings existing in the experiment, and the improvement method.
