Biometric is the use of person’s own physical characteristics or behavioral characteristics, combined with information technology and computer technology, to identify the right person. Meanwhile, applications of biometric identification technology are now widely used; it could be seen in a variety of security access control systems. For example, biological identification was used as the core technology of various security and attendance equipment. In this paper, a new system with hardware and software will be designed which used a palm print and palm vein recognition algorithm and a special video camera that could collect visible and infrared light images, it could be used in high security level access control hardware and software technology solutions. These biometric devices which foreign and domestic researchers designed are generally based on ARM, DSP or FPGA processor, using a scanner, CCD, CMOS camera and USB video camera as a collector, and using Windows CE, Embedded Linux and uClinux operating system to develop software of applications. By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the above options, and combined with the characteristics of non-contact palm print and palm vein recognition technology, the paper gives an ARM Cortex-A8based embedded platform, that used dual CMOS USB camera and Linux operating systems, and also gives the software applications based on QT/Embedded. And the access control device would capture both palm print and palm vein of subcutaneous as biometric features, and it also could have a fast and accurate recognition and powerful application. The main researches of this paper are carried out:1) Using the ARM Cortex-A8processor as the core of access control equipment, completing the circuit design, including DDR memory, LCD monitors, sound card and Ethernet communications interface circuits. At the same time, the device using a microcontroller which connected with ARM processor to send and receive commands through an electronic lock.2) Transplanting the operating system of embedded Linux, and designing the driver of a special dual CMOS USB frames camera driver. The video driver and the images display is firstly designed and implemented on Linux. And completing each other peripherals drivers, and making the file system.3) The design also must finish the migration of cross-platform compiling of the palm print and palm vein recognition algorithm, and to develop an applications that based on the QT/embedded graphics libraries, the applications could schedule algorithm and device’s resources to guide users to register palm print and palm vein characteristics and identify the user, it also could view the logs on the device and connect to the network. After the completion of the research, we could achieve an ARM Cortex-A8processor-based embedded access control system that using palm print and palm vein as recognition algorithm, the entrance guard would become the first use of the processor with embedded Linux operating system, palm print and palm vein information identification equipment. And the device with the application software that could be used as access control and attendance machine, it could provide a high level of security authentication for users, and would have a very large market prospect.
