With the rapid development of wireless and mobile communication technology, new communication services continue to emerge, which leads to the scarcity of radio spectrum. Wireless communication systems suffer from scarcity in spectrum resource and inefficiency in spectrum usage due to the conventional fixed spectrum allocation approach. Cognitive radio has been viewed as a novel approach for improving the spectrum utilization by allowing the secondary users to opportunistically access the spectrum allocated to the primary users. Cognitive radio technology contains several technical fields, this thesis focuses on the spectrum allocation algorithms in radio resource management. This thesis analyses the current research of spectrum allocation algorithm firstly, and then proposes two new algorithms based on game theory and auction theory respectively. The former relaxes the rationality hypothesis and assumes that the primary users have incomplete information. The latter implements a fully distributed spectrum market, including multiple primary users and multiple secondly users. The auction-based model is based on Dutch auction instead of English auction in order to reduce communication overhead. In addition, a specific utility function and an adaptive step adjustment method are put forward.
