Critical thinking consists of skills such as relfection, induction, summary, assumption,reasoning, and evaluation. It plays a crucial part in cultivating students’ creative spirit andcreative ability. Compared with western countires, the researches about critical thinkingstarted late in China. In addition, the education direction in China, which is seirouslyexam-oirented, has long neglected the cultivatio’n of students critical thinking ability.Reading is an important way for people to obtain information and knowledge andreading teaching is an indispensable part of English teaching in senior high school. However,most English reading teaching in China ignore the extensive thinking of deep aspects such asthe structure of the atricle, the emotion and attitude of the author and wirting purpose of theauthor, which affects the all-round development of students’ thinking ability. At the sametime, Mew Curirculum Standards (NCS) issued by the ministry of education in2013explicitlypointed that English teaching should "focus on improving student’s ability of obtaining andprocessing information as well as analyzing and solving problems in English, especially payatt’ention to improve students ability of thinking and expressing in English, to cultivate theircritical thinkin"g ability, English teaching in high school should not only demand students tomaster vocabulary and grammar knowledge but also train students’ to master the methods ofcirtical thinking such as prediction, analysis, and inference. Therefore, to develop critical1thinking in high school is beneficial to the students ability of cirtical reading and conforms tothe requirements of the NCS and the new era of development‘For these reasons, beginningrfom the requirements of quality education, this study tired to cultivate senior high schoolEnglish reading teaching to the students’ ability of cirtical thinking.This study is an expeirmental research based on critical thinking and some relatedtheoiresof thear st. The subjects e study are the first-yudents rfom Aiffliated Middle School of Yuncheng University. Through questionnaire, class observation and other methods, theresearcher tries to cultivate students’ ability of critical reading thinking in the process ofteaching. On the basis of the principle that senior high school English teaching shouldcombine reading with writing, the research pays attention to observe the difference ofstudents’ writing proficiency before and after the experiment. The data collected in thisexperiment are analyzed by SPSS17.0analysis of experimental data and the researcher putsforward the methods of training students’ critical thinking. After a semester of training, theresearcher finds that students have had a certain degree of understanding critical readingthinking. The ability of critical reading thinking helps to improve students’ ability of readingand obtaining information and it has positive transfers to students’ writing proficiency.
