| This report is based on the translation of Chapter 11 The Unified Field Theory of Elon Musk from the book Elon Musk:Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future. This is a biography written by American veteran journalist and famous columnist Ashlee Vance in 2015, which mainly aims to describe Silicon Valley’s renowned entrepreneur and innovator Elon Musk’s life and work.This report analyzes the problems in translation process and respectively puts forward the corresponding strategies on three levels:lexicon, syntax and discourse style. On the lexical level, the report focuses on the translation of specialized vocabulary and culture-loaded words, and also explains the application of conversion of part of speech. On the syntactic level, to solve the translation problems on complicated and long sentences, the report discusses the translation skills of splitting and restructuring, adding and omitting. Finally, the report analyzes the characteristics of biographical text, which can be considered as a combination of "history" and "novel". In the end, the author of the report concludes that in order to retain the smoothness and naturalness of the target text while representing the writing style and culture of the source text, the translator should combine foreignization and domestication.The main purpose of this report is to analyze the strategies in translating biographical text. In addition to that, by translating Musk’s biography, the author hopes more readers can know Elon Musk and apprehend the new trends of worldwide technology and business development. |
