As a new-born education program, Sino-foreign joint education has developed rapidly in China in recent years due to the ceaseless development of China’s economy and educational reform. Therefore, the Sino-foreign joint education documents are becoming more and more indispensable.The translation of Sino-foreign joint education documents plays an important role in examination and approval of Sino-foreign joint education program, and accounts for too much in the implement of the program. All of the above situations have raised higher requirement for translating high-quality of the contracts.The Skopos theory, which was advanced by Vermeer in 1978, frees translation from the bondage of "source language", and provides translation, especially the translation of codex with a new perspective. The Skopos theory proposes to select proper translating techniques in accordance with all information of "source language" such as "Purpose determines method". The three rules of Skopos theory, namely, skopos rule, loyalty rule and coherence rule balance the contradiction between translating methods. They also free the translators by enabling them to choose various translating methods.Under the instruction of Skopos theory, the memorandum of cooperation, understanding, and cooperation contracts among Nanjing Agriculutral University, Taizhou Teachers College and relevant universities in America, England and Canada are studied in this thesis.In this thesis, the writer analyzes the whole translating process, and probes into the demands, features and difficulties of Sino-foreign joint education documents combining with the writer’s translating practice on this sort of official documents. This thesis contains four sections. Section One mainly introduces the background of this program, features of source language, and accomplishment of the program. As for the introduction, Section Two introduces the related background of the subject studied, the significance, the structure as well as achievements. This part makes preparation for case study by laying an emphasis on Skopos theory with its three rules, and the present research findings. Section Three is about the case study. This article analyzes some basic translating methods of Sino-foreign joint education documents. Section Four is the an conclusion. In this part, the writer summarizes the basic opinions, and advances the proposal of further study.
