| With the development of society and the deepening of economic globalization, society’s need for applicable talents with high qualities is becoming stronger and stronger.moreover, English is playing a more and more important role in fostering talents. English teaching of higher vocational colleges aims at fostering high qualities talents with English skills.This objective demands students learning English knowledge, mastering English skills as well as the culture of this language, which puts forward higher requirements for English course and English teaching in higher vocational colleges. However, the present English teaching in higher vocational colleges of China focuses on teaching and neglect skills training,culture and customs introduction and it is restricted by results of examinations, deviates from the English teaching goals.According to language acquisition theory,students not only need to learn English knowledge in class, but also improve their English application ability and artistic appreciation by English practical activities. English hidden curriculum is a process where it turns the cultural values and regulations hidden in dominant course into English education intentionally or unintentionally, it is the supplement and extension. It plays an important role in developing overall qualities of students owing to its subtle ways of education. But English teaching of higher vocational colleges in China has been putting emphasis on developing dominant course,and neglects hidden curriculum.Although some colleges have already realized the importance of English hidden curriculum, and have begun developing it, there are still some problems which to some extent, prevent the development of vocational colleges and the realization of the talents-training goals. Therefore, it is significant to strengthen the development of hidden curriculum in higher vocational colleges with scientific means and to play its positive roles in English learning.This paper tells the appearance and the development of hidden curriculum, defining the relating concepts on the basis of sorting out the references and summarizes the scope of hidden curriculum. Taking Xian Yang Vocational & Technical Colleges as an example, it analyzes the present situation of hidden curriculum in higher vocational colleges with document research〠investigationã€statistic and analyzes the problems in the aspects of hardware〠software and so on.On the basis of the study on the relating theories and the statistics,this paper puts forward some creative suggestions and reform measures to the problems, including defining the concept of English hidden curriculum, using scientific teaching methods, improving hardware, strengthening the construction of teachers and developing micro course and so on and it provides theories for the development of English hidden curriculum in Xian Yang Vocational & Technical Colleges and provides references for the development of English hidden curriculum in higher vocational colleges. |
