As one of the major research subjects, the modeling language of Chinese ink portraits painting(CIPP) has been continuous explored and analyzed by numerous artists; meanwhile, there are significant arguments on relevant topics as the development of the traditional modeling language of CIPP and the impact of the western perception of early 20 th century. Along with the development, the artists become more knowledgeable in aesthetic standards and modeling and this results in the gradually matured CIPP. With identifying the reasons of diversified modeling languages and describing the representative works, the artists started to study the multiplicity of the ages. Consequently, the study of modeling language of CIPP has become diversified and more active. The main body comprises four parts. The first chapter will describe the developing processes of the modelling language in a macro level; based on the timeline, the modelling lan guages could be summarized into two categories which are traditional language and contempo rary language. In the second chapter, the study will analyse the inheritance and transformation of the contemporary modelling language. Firstly, this section will critically discuss the traditi onal language and its inheritance; specifically, this analysis and discussion involve three drawi ng skills: line composition, cursive painting which is not for shape similarity, and stylized lan guage. Then, the second chapter will illustrate the reasons for the transformation. The chapter three will mainly discuss the new context of the diversified development of CIPP’s modelling language. In this part, the author concludes the modelling languages as realistic language, exp ressive language and nonrepresentational language. In addition, each type of three languages will be analysed individually under three perspectives(development mechanism, forming pro cess and current situation); meanwhile, the representatives of modern artists and their master workers will be demonstrated and analysed. In the fourth chapter, this dissertation will extend the study of the modelling language. By considering the relationship between ink technique a nd modelling, the author will list the contradiction and the harmony. Besides, this section will incorporate the innovation of the modelling language to demonstrate how the contemporary C IPP achieve the extension and what innovative development has been made in current social a esthetic appreciation.
