From Rebel General To Loyal General

Li Cunxiao was a famous general in the Tang and the Five dynasties.In the historian records which is on behalf of the state discourse,although he was brave and skillful in battle,he couldn’t get rid of narrow-minded and ambitious and a betrayer.In the ancient literary works,his image begans to change.In folk,he is portrayed as a person who is brave and battlewise,loyal and guided by feelings.His legends widely spreaded in folk,and he is known as the’most bold and powerful’general in the end of the Tang and the Five dynasties.This thesis is on the basis of classic literature,ancient novels,traditional operas,integration of folklore and the field research in Linqiu.Through these datums,the legends of Li Cunxiao are analysed and discussed.The full text is divided into six parts:introduction,epilogue and four chapters and sections of the main body.The introduction includes these following contents,research foundation,the significance of the research background support and research status,research methods and data source.The first chapter is the historical background and the representation of the modern legends of Li Cunxiao,and the introduce of the cultural ecological environment of Linqiu in which the legengs spreaded mainly.The second chapter is the analyses of the figures and the evolutions of the storyline of the legends of Li Cunxiao,all of these are on the basis of the carding of the historical records and the pop literary works about him.The historical records side describes his figures through the main battles in that period.On the other hand,the discussion of the pop literary works could be expounded with different dynasties,and the climax is the Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties.The third chapter is the subject classification of the text of the legends of Li Cunxiao,they are broadly divided into five types,the fantastic born legends,the innate strength legends,the heroic fights legends,the tragic death legends and the scenery legends.In addition,this chapter discusses the cultural connotation of every type above.The fourth chapter is the concrete relate and analyze of the narrative features of the of legends of Li Cunxiao.In the process of the continuous development of the legends,people use exaggerated creation to sanctify Li Cunxiao as a legendary figure,and even some plots what are out of the humans’ world.This chapter also explains the modern transmission of the legends.The conclusion part makes a summary of the contents of this study.In a word,this thesis talks the legends of Li Cunxiao as a case study,trying to explore the types,the cultural connotations,the transmissions and the historical evolution of the figure of him,through the view of folk narration,theme classification and communication,with the methods of historical literature research,text analysis,and field investigation.
