Job Burnout, Coping Styles, Psychological Harmony Among Hotel Employees

Among the numerous professional groups, the hotel industry belongs in the service category and has certain particularities. Hotel industry involves a lot of physical labor, complex work conditions and long hours; it also involves strict service specification. Hotel employees’ have reported widespread problems such as big working strength, long working time, complex working standards, frequent occurrence of emergencies, and dealing with customer complaints. Under long-term work under such the environments, hotel employees’ may feel increasing work pressure, declining work enthusiasm and reduced work efficiency. This would result in job burnout. In order to enable companies to improve the severe work environment and enable employees to actively and effectively complete their tasks, managers need to understand employees’ job burnout and the influence factors of job burnout.Hotel employees’ are the subject of this research. This article discusses the relationship among the hotel employees’ coping styles, psychological harmony and job burnout. By compiling questionnaires, using the method of random in seven hotels in Xi ’an,750 hotel employees were surveyed, measuring tools including revised MBI-GS job burnout questionnaires, coping styles questionnaire and psychological harmony questionnaire. Using descriptive statistics, independent samples T test, single factor analysis of variance, correlation analysis and building the structure model to analyze the data, the research following results were obtained:(1) The coping styles, psychological harmony and job burnout of the hotel employees have different degrees of difference on demographic variables; (2) Correlation analysis showed that the coping styles, psychological harmony and job burnout of the hotel employees have strong correlation. Among them, There is a positive correlation between the problem coping styles and psychological harmony and a negative correlation between the problem coping styles and job burnout. Moreover, there is a negative correlation between the emotional coping styles and psychological harmony, and there is a positive correlation between the emotional coping styles and job burnout.; (3) The psychological harmony of the hotel employees played a partial redundant intermediary role between coping styles and job burnout.Research conclusions:Firstly, burnout was more severe among the younger hotel employees than older hotel employees. Younger hotel employees should be as the key target of treating job burnout.Secondly, hotel employees’ job burnout is strongly influenced by their choice of coping styles and the degree of their psychological harmony.Thirdly, Hotel managers can use methods such as make targeted training for employees, improving the level of employees’ psychological harmony, encouraging employees to adopt positive coping styles and providing employees with mental health services to prevent and relieve the employees’ job burnout.
