This report is accomplished based on the translation of the narrative nonfictionentitled American Icon: Alan Mulally and the Fight to Save Ford Motor Companywritten by Bryce G. Hoffman, an experienced reporter for the Detroit News. Chapter1and Chapter5of the book were chosen to be translated.The source text gives an account of the Ford turnaround in a truthful manner and isbrimming with business management and marketing wisdom, which allows the authornot only to have access to much professional knowledge about the auto industry,but alsoto improve his translation skills and competence. During translation, the translator had astrong feeling that translating is a mixture of frowns and joys and a perfect “grafting” ofboth the original meaning and style is a demanding job. To achieve that goal, one muststudy unremittingly and hone his translating skills over and over again.This translation report offers a description of the translation task, a discussion on theproblems encountered in the translation, and a conclusion on the translation practice.This report mainly consists of three parts:Part one is introduction which offers a brief overview of the goals to be achievedand the theoretical significance and application value that the research shall havescientific and technological advancement and social development.Part two is the main body of the report, divided into three chapters:Chapter Ⅰ is description of the translation task, giving a brief introduction of thetranslation task, background of the author and the reason why the source text was chosen.Chapter Ⅱ introduces the implementation of the translation task, includingpreparation prior to translation, translation process and proofreading.Chapter Ⅲ represents the case study of the translation task, setting forth thetranslation approaches and strategies adopted during the translation process, includingtransformation of part of speech, disposal of passive sentences, semantic extension, etc.Part three reaches a conclusion on the translation, stating the author’s experiencegained through the translation process and understanding of the translation cause.
