The large size of slab laser plays a great advantage in the field of high power and high beam quality. But if there are defects in the process of growth or in the slab’s optical processing of noncompliance, it will have an influence on the beam quality. Therefore, in the perspective of improving the beam quality of the lasers, we think it necessary to set up a method that characterization of crystal slab on beam quality under a state. And it helps to study the beam quality of slab lasers.The paper introduces the characteristics on its physics, chemistry and laser aspects of the laser crystal materials, analyzes the research status and the existing problems of the solid laser slab. It also introduces the theoretical and experimental research mainly for the characterization method of the crystal slab. Then it discusses the results of the characterization and evaluation of crystal slab, and analyzes the factors that the performance of the crystal slab affects on the quality of the beam, and the aiming is to pick out the crystal slab with high beam quality.
