Goal setting, as an indispensable part of mental training, has a direct bearing onthe orientation and intensity of one’s motivation. A correct and effective goal canhelp one not only concentrate his energy, but also motivate, instruct and organize hispractice, serving as an important guiding and driving force. Being an important part ofSanda, roundhouse kick also plays an essential role in today’s unarmed martial art, thus has become one of the greatly-emphasized footwork throughout the world.Roundhouse kick is an essential technique in Sanda, therefore, a practitioner’smastery of roundhouse kick is greatly relevant to his mastery of Sanda. However, as aresult of lacking objects, nowadays’ conventional teaching methods always failachieving best results. Application of goal setting in Sanda teaching enables bothteachers and students to have a clear aim, which can help them make personalizedteaching plans, manage time reasonably and efficiently, thus achieve better teachingquality and make students attain the maximum in their roundhouse kick learning inSanda.By the means of literature review, observation, expert consultation, mathematicalstatistics and image measurement, the thesis presents a research on the learningquality of an8-week teaching program of roundhouse kick in Sanda. The practitionersare divided into an experimental and a control group. Between the two groupscomparison and analysis of their learning out-turns are made, which are based on theindexes of height of the knee, velocity of the kick, and the completion time of aroundhouse kick.The8-week experimental program was started in April,2013. The objects were12undergraduates of Class2of the year2010, majoring traditional and national sports in the school of physical education of Shandong Normal University. They were of aboutthe same level in their Sanda skills. The12undergraduates were randomly dividedinto an experimental and a control group. Taught by a same teacher, the two groups ofstudents shared the same training ground, equipment, contents of lessons, and tutoringtime. Yet the teaching methods applied differed between them. While conventionalmethod was applied to the control group, to the experimental group aphysiological-psychology-combined method, that is, the goal-setting teaching method, was applied. Before the experiment, all students in the two groups had gone through atest which was filmed by a Panasonic digital camera. The test was filmed on a fixedspot. The camera applied was supported by a tripod and placed at the height of1.5meters above the ground. The view-finding limit of the camera was4meters, and thefilming frequency was250HZ. In addition to the test made before the experiment, asecond test was made after8weeks when the experiment had been completed. Theimages collected were processed with Aijie plane analytical system, from which theretrieved statistics was further processed with SPSS11.5for Windows and EXCEL2003.The8-week experiment of goal-setting has substantiated the feasibility ofcombination of goal-setting theory and roundhouse kick teaching in Sanda.Goal-setting can improve not only the learning out-turns of roundhouse kick in Sandabut also the efficiency of tutoring. In addition, it also serves as a means to balanceteacher’s guidance with students’initiative, and help build self-confidence in students. In doing so, the students’ passion will be aroused, and a correct learning attitudeadopted, enabling them to work harder and improve their self-discipline. As it turnedout, the group taught by goal-setting method achieved a better learning out-turn thanthat taught by conventional teaching method. Thus it can be concluded that it isfeasible to apply goal-setting in the teaching of roundhouse kick in Sanda. Comparedwith the conventional-method group, the goal-setting group achieved a better out-turnin performing the teacher’s instructions, learning attitudes, as well as the efforts theymade. All in all, the goal-setting group achieved a higher learning quality than the conventional-method group.Although the thesis, by combining psychological and conventional training methods, has remedied the defects of conventional teaching methods and improved the learningqualities of roundhouse kick in Sanda, it also has its own shortcomings. The authorhopes it can be continually perfected in its future application, and contribute to furtherimprovement of the teaching quality of Sanda.
