The separable word is a special kind of group made up of double syllables in modern Chinese, across two parts:morphology and syntax. To foreign students,acquiring separable words is one of the headaches in teaching of Chinese as a second language.Owing to the fact that the separable word is a very peculiar linguistic phenomenon in Chinese and quite different from the words in the first language of the foreign students; lots of errors appeared in learning and in using of the separable word Many researchers pay much attention to separable words and have made large numbers of related academic achievements,but there are only a few researches on the errors to separable words for native English-speaking students.Firstly, all the relevant achievements accomplished and theories are summarized and classified in this paper. Especially, this paper detailed researches the definition,classification and extensions,judgment rules, the error analysis and the different studies to separable words according to the students from different countries.On this basis,this paper uses the questionnaire is a written list of questions of separable words which are answered by the native English-speaking students from eight different countries,then has given a forecast to the errors probably to appear in the test.The25common separable words used by foreign students which are selected with HSK Guideline take the role of carrier in this test.Based on statistical result of investigation,the author finds that students make of more or less errors in the part of questions where there are predictive errors.Based on the comprehensive analysis of these errors,the author sums up seven common types of errors and then makes a summary of the causes of error from the five influential aspects,Chinese,the native language,English,the target language,different English and Chinese culture,learning strategies and other uncertainties.Finally, theory with practice,the effective teaching strategies and suggestions are given from the teaching principles and the methods of teaching practice.There are still some inadequacies of this research,but the author attempts to through this paper provide some effective methods for native English-speaking learners to study Chinese separable words,aims to provide an empirical study by a questionnaire survey to get some relatively comprehensive results.By these efforts,I believe that native English-speaking learners can acquire the separable words in a relatively short time,accurately apply them to the daily communication,reducing or even avoiding the related errors.Meanwhile,I hope that related textbooks can be written based on this study.
