Chinese painting,as a concrete carrier of cultural ideology, symbolizes heredity and timecharacteristics. The earliest mature Chinese painting featured human characters,presiding thepainting field before the North Song Dynasty. The human character Chinese painting,aimed atstance and position,is aesthetic standard of painters and critics. Vividness and liveliness,spiritover appearance and appearance combined with spirit are the important standards adopted toevaluate the human character Chinese paintings. The expounding of the relationships of thespirit and appearance has never changed from ancient history till now, and is regarded as anexquisite tradition and a significant principle of human character Chinese painting. RenBonian,as a prominent painter in the later half of Qing Dynasty,made an influencing explorationinto the human character painting,developing the classical human character painting into amodern one. His success in the research and development of human character painting is stillinstructive and inspiring in todayËŠs paintings and critics.During the preparatory stage of the dissertation, a great deal of time and energy has beenconsumed in order to copy and arrange the comments and viewpoints all long the history. Theappreciation upon these ideology helps to latter understand RenËŠs thoughts. The dissertationstarts with the traditional human character theory, making a deeper analysis towards RenËŠsprinciple, by referring to all the paintings by Ren available. The first part of the dissertationdescribes the traditional human character stance and position. The second part majors indepicting the aesthetic origin and whole style. The third part conveys the transformation frompsychological harmony to form harmony, the borrowing of foreign terms, the change formindividual-orientation to public-orientation and model implication in RenËŠs painting,advocating his ever-lasting influence to human character painting. Compared with the socialstyle, stance and position ideology, technique application at that time, Ren sparkled with hisunique characteristics and spirit against that special times. The whole dissertation, based on thereference arrangement, works analysis, style study, comprehensively adopts thesociology,history,comparativity, and reflects the authorËŠs personal practice, thoughts andunderstanding towards RenËŠs theory in human characterËŠs stance and position. All in all, the dissertation is a tentative effort to expound RenËŠs theory in human characterËŠs stance andposition.
