Efficient topology control technology is one of the main technical means to save energy andimprove the performance of wireless sensor networks. With the application of solar cells andheterogeneous nodes in wireless sensor networks, the imbalanced energy distribution characterasticwidely exists in wireless sensor networks and it has become a vital factor that must be considered indesigning topology control algorithms of wireless sensor networks. It is urgent and valuable to workout an effective topology control algorithm that is suitable for the energy-imbalanced wirelesssensor networks. Two topology control algorithms EADCA and APPA for energy-imbalanced wireless sensornetworks are presented. EADCA is an energy-aware topology control algorithm. In EADCA, everynode competes to be the cluster head based on its remaining energy and the average remainingenergy of its neighbors. This algorithm makes use of the empirical data to reduce communicationsand it makes the isolated nodes and the nodes with too little energy sleep for a round in the processof electing cluster heads. APPA is a distributed topology control algorithm based on the fixedpartition. This algorithm makes the mobile nodes uniformly distributed in the network and choosesthe specific mobile node to be the fixed cluster head for each fixed partition, and makes the fixedpartition without any mobile node construct its cluster periodically.According to the simulation, the number of the cluster heads generated by the topology controlalgorithm EADCA for the energy-imbalanced wireless sensor networks is superior and inaccordance with the theoretical value, and the network with EADCA can work for a long time. Thetopology control algorithm APPA for the energy-imbalanced wireless sensor networks caneffectively control the density of the cluster heads and make them uniformly distributed in thenetwork. APPA can achieve an efficient topology with good coverage and have good energyefficiency.
