The research of photonic crystal fiber is in the scope of the microstructurefiber. It is a two-dimensional photonic crystal, be composed of quartz glasssubstrate and air holes, contributing to introduce defects in the optical fiber corealong the Z axis (transmission direction).Nowadays, with the rapid developmentof the process and demand of optical fiber production, the photonic crystal fiberdesigned by researchers has not only limited to the cycle arrangement of airholes, but broken the cycle of symmetrical structure, designed with differentcharacteristics. Meanwhile, the materials of photonic crystal fiber are notconfined to air and quartz glass any more. Another materials such as the polymerPCF, all solid PCF, and air hole core filled with liquid crystal can be used in thedesign of photonic crystal fiber. And the transmission characteristics of thephotonic crystal fiber can be tuned by those developments. Filling with liquidcrystal, polymer or other materials in the optical fiber, controlling the refractiveindex of the material or other physical parameters can achieve the characteristicscontrollable PCF, and can be used to produce a variety of tunable functionaldevices.Based on the study of the transmission characteristics of photonic crystalfiber, this paper has mainly discussed the electric field sensing properties of totalinternal reflection photonic crystal fiber (TIR-PCF) filled with liquid crystal,and used the finite element method to analyze what effects the liquid crystalfilled with high refractive index in the air holes of the fiber has on thetransmission mechanism and transmission characteristics of fiber. The researchon the relationship between fundamental mode of photonic crystal fiber and thechanges of electric field shows that being filled with liquid crystal could serve toachievement of transmission of the photonic crystal fiber light guidemechanism.(1) The development, term, characteristics of photonic crystal fiber, aredescribed as well as the role played by PCF in different sensing field.(2) The physical characteristics and applications of the liquid crystal is described. From the angle of mathematics, analyze the optical and electricalproperties of the liquid crystal, which has provided liquid crystal photoniccrystal fiber numerical simulation with reasonable theoretical basis.(3) The simulation processes of COMSOL Muhiphysics is described. Usefinite element method to accomplish geometric modeling, divide grid, set theequations and boundary parameters, solve and improve problem solving.(4) According to the simulation processes of photonic crystal fiber fillednematic liquid crystal and the function of the liquid crystal refractive indexalong with the changes in the applied electric field, discuss the relationshipbetween some variable quantities and intensity of field, duty cycle. Thosevariable quantities include the refractive index of the base film of the liquidcrystal of photonic crystal fiber, the effective mode area, numerical aperture andchromatic dispersion.
