In recent years, portable satellite earth station plays an increasingly important role in emergency communications, so the requirements of speed, accuracy and reliability for satellite tracking are also getting higher and higher. Based on these considerations, this paper committed to research and achieve the overall system of satellite tracking technology.The focus of this study is the satellite tracking technology, in particular to address slow tracking speed, low precision and easily mistaken for tracking. Based on the old tracking technology, we redesign the star search process and coarse tracking process, and ultimately achieve the throughout improved satellite communication system.The purpose of star search process is to seek a position which AGC is higher than the threshold level value, then the antenna goes into the rough tracking module. The major improvements of star search module is to use partial derivative direction to optimize the tracking path, then we can save tracking time. The new star search method is called gradient direction stepper tracking. The coarse tracking module mainly takes use of the technology of variable step size, solve the contradiction of tracking speed and accuracy by variable step size.The core of variable step stepper tracking technology is that the step size of each tracking step is variable, The change in size of the step size with the AGC changes certain relationship exists. When the change of AGC is large, the step size becomes large too, Otherwise the step size is small when the change of AGC is small. The continued step change not only help in improve speed a big step length, but also conducive to improve accuracy in small steps. A large number of tests to prove that the variable step stepper tracking technology enhance the performance of the portable station.
