With the ATS (Automatic Test System) emerged, largely meet today’s ever-increasing requirements of circuit test and diagnosis tasks. However, most modern ATS are instrument-oriented, while universal ATS are very few. Versatility is reflected in two aspects:one part is TPS portability, the other part is the exchangeablity of instruments. In addition, the realization of versatility should consider from software platform architecture and test resource’s information standardization.Special ATS’s test environment is based on the instruments, which causes the close coupling between the ATS software platform and the instruments, and leads to the problems of TPS portability and the instrument exchangeablility. Moreover, special ATS platform’s expansibility is very poor and resource’s information standardization isn’t considered for exchanging. In order to realize the versatility, IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee issues two standards: IEEE Std1641(IEEE Standard for Signal and Test Definition) and IEEE Std1671(IEEE Standard for Automatic Test Markup Language (ATML) for Exchanging Automatic Test Equipment and Test Information via XML), referred to STD and ATML. From perspective of signal, the two standards standardize the description of key information of ATS, and minimize the coupling among ATS’s components, provide the support to realization of versatility.This paper analyze the reason which lead to the versatility problems, and propose some ideas to solve problems according to STD and ATML, and illustrate a schema to achieve the ideas which called resource allocating during run-time. In the implementation process, the author’s work is divided into two parts:1. Author studied signal modeling methods of STD, and developed a signal modeling tool to achieve visual signal model and produce XML signal description as output.2. Author studied signal requirements’transferring and mapping process, and develop signal control component.At present, the domestic productions of signal-oriented ATS platform are very few, so the schame called resource allocating during run-time has the important reference value. In addition, signal modeling tool and signal control component are designed according to modular technology, so this can facilitate to build platform and maintain the software modules.
