Teaching—and—learning is an interaction between teachers and students. It isacceptable to seek reasons from both sides if there is any problem in learning process.English learning is no exception. When students try to find out reasons for theirachievements in English learning, they show a distinct individual difference inattribution. The positive attribution style will influence their self--emotion and learningbehaviors afterwards. As for students in secondary vocational schools, they likeattributing to lack of interest, effort and learning difficulty. They tend to be blank ifthere is a further question. It is obvious that they do not have a clear idea of elements inattribution, or they lack appropriate guide to a positive attribution. Therefore, the authorwould like to do a research on such topic. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the influence of attribution styles on theEnglish academic records in secondary vocational schools, which will in turn make boththe learners and the teachers focus on the importance of attribution styles. The researchapplies two instruments—questionnaire combined with interview—in order to show therelationship between attribution styles and the English academic records. The subjectsof the research are students from Dalian Women’s Vocational School, Dalian LightIndustry Vocational School and Dalian No.16High School. The data collected alsoshow the differences of attribution in gender, as well as the characteristics of secondaryvocational school students compared with those from high schools. The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One Introduction. It briefly introduces the reasons for the topic and thesignificance of this research, both educationally and socially. And it clearly instructs theorganization of this thesis so that readers can immediately get a general idea of thethesis.Chapter Two Literature Review. It lists all the theories that are used to elaborate thethesis, including attribution and intelligence theories both in China and abroad. All thetheories mentioned are in a sequence of time development, from its infancy to itsmaturity. Some of them are still popular nowadays. The author makes a synthesis of theabove in order to make a solid foundation for the research.Chapter Three Research Methodology. It describes two instruments that are appliedin this research—questionnaire and interview. It explains the subjects, process and thepurpose of each step in detail.Chapter Four Data Analysis, Findings and Implications. It is divided into three parts.Firstly, On the basis of the original data, the author has made several comparisonsincluding the comparison between individuals, the comparison between the male andthe female, the comparison between secondary vocational school students and thosefrom high school.According to the data analysis, there are a few findings. The attribution stylesaffect the English academic records in a significant way. The attribution plays animportant role in English learning in secondary vocational schools. There is a genderdifference in attribution style to some extent. Meanwhile, students in secondary vocational schools have some unique characteristics compared with those from highschools.Based on the above two parts, it is suggested that teachers must carry on theirguiding role in shaping students’ attribution, concern about gender education andrespect students’ individual differences.Chapter Five Conclusion. Several conclusions have been drawn as follows:1. Students of positive attribution style have got higher English academic records.2. The male students tend to have a positive attribution than the female.3. Students from secondary vocational students lack intrapersonal ability in makingattribution.4. Teachers are responsible to enable students’ positive attribution style whilerespecting their individual differences. In addition, there is still room for improvement during the research process. I alsomake my recommendations for the further study on this topic. All in all, the purpose of the research is to call teachers’ attention to their guidingrole in shaping students’ attribution, gender education and individual teaching. I hope Icould make my own contribution to the development of English teaching in secondaryvocational schools together with other fellows who are contributing to this field.
