Pun Appreciations Of Multiple Perspectives

Pun is one of the figure of speech people like to use, which has a long history in Chinese as well. However, it is pity that people haven’t paid enough attention to it. The study on pun still looks quite insufficient when it was compared with the study of other figure of speech.Traditional study of pun is mainly about definition, nature, structure and function etc. Accompanied with the development of new fields in rhetorics, the study on pun is starting a new era.Therefore based on the classifications of traditonal rhetorics, it takes advantage of the marginality of pun and combines new theories such as context,socio-psychological fectors, receiving perspectives to study the semantics level of pun materials.In this way, it will not only be quite benificial for us to study pun comprehensively and thoroughly,but also breaks the traditional study way to get a new understanding.The article is diveded into five parts:The first chapter mainly introduces the current study situation of pun, the paper’s study target, the train of thought as well as the material resources.The second chapter introduces the pun’s definition、nature and a comprehensive summary of the diachronic history of the development of pun. It also summerizes the classification of pun in traditional rhetorics and chooses three tpyes of classification as the basis of the paper with illustrations in detail.The third chapter elaborates the theoretical background, study purposes as well as missions of socio-psychological rehtorics. From the viewpoint of social politics, social morals, beauty appreciation and speech roles types, it discusses thesocio-psychological foundation and mechanism with analysizing the complex relationship betweenthebuild and the understanding of pun in order to explore the regular pattern of pun.The forth chapter introduces context and its basic functions. According to the four types of context theory, it discusses the influence mechanisim on pun with illustrations to makes it clear that the significance of context on the pun meanings’determination. The fifth chapter mainly introduces the theory of the Receiving rhetorics. From the viewpoint of rehtorical effects, it makes use of four types of the Receiving rhetorics to investigate complex narrative process, analyzise the cause of different rhetoricaleffects in order to summarize the pragmatic principles of pun.
