In the process of development of Chinese new poetry, Mu Dan represents an image of poets who break through the tradition consciously. In his poetry creating, Mu Dan accepts and transforms the Western Modernist Literature, at the same time, he also inherits and rebels the Chinese traditional poetry. The thesis regards Mu Dan’s poems as the basic object of study, specifically discussing from the three aspects:the poetry theory, poetry theme and poetry art. In the course of discussion, Mu Dan and his poems are the core points and mainly adopts the theory of "close reading" in new criticism, the study about the influence of the historical context of the cross-cultural, as well as the basic comparative methods. According to the content of Chinese new poetry, this thesis fully studies "the New Lyric " and the penetration of the western literature’s influence and Mu Dan’s choice as well as his creative transformation, collating and summarizing the relationship between Mu Dan’s poetry and Chinese new poetry. Through these discussions above, the thesis aims to grasp the whole of Mu Dan poetry and to effectively investigate his poems’ subjectivity, then promote the study of Mu Dan’s poetry theory and westernized image.The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter mainly analyzes the construction of Mu Dan’s "the Deep Lyric". First of all, this chapter analyzes the transitional nature of Mu Dan’s "the New Lyric" in the early1940s, including the origin, connotion and essence of "the New Lyric" as well as the relationship between "the New Lyric" and "the Deep Lyric". Second, this chapter analyzes the theory of "the Deep Lyric" and collates the western factors that influence Mu Dan’s "the Deep Lyric". Then this chapter investigates the reasons that Mu Dan chooses " the Deep Lyric " as well as analyzes Mu Dan’s personalized acceptance of the western influence, combining with Mu Dan’s educational background, his own quality, his realistic feelings and his aesthetic pursuit.The second chapter discusess Mu Dan’s poetry theme. According to Mu Dan’s poetry theory, Mu Dan’s poetry theme focuses on people and society. From the aspect of suppression exposed on the individual by the society, the relationships of Mu Dan’s poetry theme consciousness and Western wilderness consciousness and Lu Xun array of nothing experience are studied. From the aspect of expressing personal feelings of social life, the difference between winter consciousness of Mu Dan’s poetry theme and Western wilderness consciousness is studied, and then the inheritance and recreation of Lu Xun array of nothing experience is analyzed. At the same time, this chapter compares Mu Dan’s natural spirit with Western modernist poets’, making a conclusion that the natural spirit in Mu Dan’s poetry theme is different from the Western wilderness consciousness. Finally, we can grasp the unique characteristics of Mu Dan’s poetry theme, that are the winter consciousness and the spirit of nature.The third chapter discusess the two aspects on lyrical styles and language arts of Mu Dan’s poetry, combining with Mu Dan’s poetry theory and poetry theme. This chapter probes into Mu Dan’s creative usage of the western modernism artistic skills, and his inheritance and reconstruction of Chinese poetic tradition. This chapter aims to help us to understand the language art of combination of the daily and strange language and the Deep Lyric style of Mu Dan’s poems, as well as to grasp the modern quality of Mu Dan’s poetry artistic exploration.
