The first part is going to introducethe Venerable Miu King’s lifetime and his preach features, and then, toanalyse the Madhyamika thoughts of Venerable Miu King according to thedependent origination and the emptiness of nature. In the end, this paper willanalyse the Madhyamika thoughts of Venerable Miu King due to the’order’ofpractice. The first part is about the Venerable Miu King’s lifetime. He left homeand entered into the buddhist monastic system when he was young. He hadendeavored for more than twenty years by himself since he was almost thirtyyears old. After that, he started to preach for nearly twenty years. Hepreached in many areas all over the world, the modes were flexible, thecontents were abundant. He valued both the shamatha and vipashyana. The second part talks about the Madhyamika philosophy of VenerableMiu King from the angle of the dependent origination and the emptiness ofnature. This part begins with the summary of the Ma^dhyamika thoughts of Venerable Miu King, after that, introduce the way in which Venerable MiuKing mixed Madhyamika and Vijn~anavadi. Venerable Miu King followednagarjuna from Mahayana Byddhism. He insisted that monks shouldperform the practices of the bodhisattva as well as thinking of the highesttruth deeply. The key of merging Madhyamika and Vijn~anavadi is how toanswer the two questions: if the nature of existence arises from dependenceon other things; if the consciousness exists while the external realm do not.Venerable Miu King handled these using a quite well method. The last part of this paper discuss the Madhyamika philosophy ofVenerable Miu King due to the’order’of practices. He valued the order ofhearing, thinking and practicing. In his view, monks should think themeaning of middle way during samatha. It was the proper method accordingto the order of hearing, thinking and practicing. Venerable Miu King thoughtthat it was impossible for monks to succeed in overcoming the hindrances ofdefilement and remove atma-graha and dharma-graha, unless theypenetrated the meaning of buddhist doctrine. And they also couldn’t accessto the path of the sages. Monks would get the wisdom attained throughhearing and thinking when they read various sutra-pitakas. Monks wouldperform upacÄrasamÄdhi only if they reach upacÄrasamÄdhi. And the criticalapproach to perform upacÄrasamÄdhi is to practise the four applications ofmindfulness. Monks should think in concentration that all things lackinherent identity and contemplate the emptiness of dharmas as well as theemptiness of self. The way of practicing the four applications of mindfulness,is also the way of practicing three samadhis. |
